Pumpkins 'Canacin'

The Canacin is a very old pumpkin variety traditionally grown on the northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The pumpkin is very unusual because they are round and very flat. The flesh of the pumpkin has a deep orange-red color, is sweet, and is highly valued by the local population. This pumpkin is now endangered as fewer and fewer farmers are growing it in Yucatan. It grows in the steaming hot and humid Yucatan during the rainy season, but experience shows that it is doing increasingly well in our climate. The pumpkins are best harvested when their skin hardens and the stem begins to dry out. Expect a growing period of more than 3 months.

Pumpkins can be grown outdoors without problems. The growing tips can be pruned regularly and are edible! Harvesting during dry weather provides the best storability. All pumpkins are edible!
