Southern Chilean evergreen tree with special properties. The plant can thrive well in a (large) pot, but here with us, in the open ground in a fairly dry place, it will certainly also succeed, as it tolerates 12 degrees of frost well. Its appearance: sturdy, leathery leaves with white, beautifully shaped flowers that develop into dark blue berries. Inhabitants of the Andes mountains have been using the tree for centuries to make soap. The inner bark is ground into powder and foams in water! The scent of the wood, which is also good timber, makes it suitable as a base for perfumes. Quillaia (E999) is extracted from the bark, known as a foaming agent in drinks (beer) and other foodstuffs. The saponin from the bark helps with coughs, etc. In short: plenty of uses!
