Sweet Potatoes 'Radiosa'

  • Product number: 409599.1
  • Origin: South America
  • Latin: Sweet potato

AVAILABLE FROM MAY AS PLANTS, WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.
'Radiosa' has pink-veined tuber flesh and a lilac skin. The plants form beautiful, deeply incised leaves. The beautiful, even tubers grow at the base of the plant, and this variety yields a good harvest outdoors too!

Originally, this well-known tuberous plant has been cultivated for more than 5000 years in South America, but by now this important source of carbohydrates has spread all over the (tropical) world. Besides the (cooked) tuber, the leaves are also very popular as spinach! In Northern Europe, cultivation is becoming increasingly feasible in summer: plant them on "ridges" that are covered with black foil or Bio Fibre Mulch for warmth. The "starter plants" you purchase can be propagated by cuttings during growth, so that a bed full of plants quickly develops. For later purchases, place the plant(s) in large pot(s) and propagate with cuttings for the following year. The plant can be kept indoors in a light and not too cold room. We supply selections that have been cultivated in our area for several years.

Our active grower is constantly looking for the best varieties of Sweet Potatoes for open ground or for the greenhouse. In May-June, he offers us young plants, and in November, the tubers from which you can grow beautiful plants yourself.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE PLANTS?
If you haven't grown plants from a tuber yourself in winter (see below), we have young plants available from May to plant out (after the last chance of night frost). The fast-creeping plants need space; plant them 40 cm apart and 80-90 cm between rows. Large raised beds are favourable for soil warmth and thus for the yield. Regular watering is very important during dry periods; professional growers often use drip irrigation. Harvest at the latest before the first night frosts.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH SUCH A TUBER?
Just put it in the ground outside? No! The cultivation is a little different from growing seed potatoes. It's a fun indoor task, in a warm spot. (From May, the task can also be done directly outdoors - in warm weather)
You need a propagator with a high lid, or you can use any container or pot that fits one or more tubers lying down. In the latter case, it is wise to make a frame over which you stretch plastic for warmth and moisture retention.
Place the tubers (lying down) 2/3 under the soil in cocopeat 809620-seed-soil-cocopeat-briquettes
Keep well lit, moist, and warm; the tuber will produce many shoots. After 5-10 cm of growth, you can break off or cut these close to the tuber and insert them directly into a pot or a swollen Jiffy-7 tablet. Every cutting will root very easily.
There are also other methods, for example in water, just watch this video on YouTube.
