Yacon 'Morado' E.a. B-Grade

  • Product number: 409500.1
  • Origin: Andes Mountains, South America
  • Latin: Polymnia sonchifolia, also known as Polymnia edulis, Smallanthus sonchifolius

Andean tubers with a fresh bite! You rarely encounter such a versatile tuber!
A selection of its many uses and properties:
1. Thanks to its high moisture content (86-90% water), the tuber is very refreshing and has a "crunchy bite" when eaten raw. Depending on the summer, the tuber contains so much sweetener that its taste is close to watermelon!
2. The tuber can be fried (in thin slices) into a delicacy.
3. (Stir-)frying, boiling... the tuber tolerates all normal preparations without falling apart (into mush).
4. Good news for diabetics and "weight watchers": the tubers owe their sweet taste to the presence of oligofructose (fructo-oligosaccharide).
5. Oligofructose stimulates beneficial bacteria in our bodies.
6. Medicinal properties: the leaf ensures that the body reacts normally and effectively to insulin. This is offered dried and powdered on many websites.
7. Syrup can be boiled from the tubers.
Plant description:
The plant originates from the Andes Mountains, where it grows at an altitude of 900-3000m. The 1-1.5m tall plants have a coarse structure with large leaves. From August-September, 10-20 tubers form underground around the plant base, with a total weight of up to 10 kg per plant! The orange-yellow bloom sometimes fails to appear in the Netherlands. Seed set is not abundant in its countries of origin.
Harvesting:
The plants are harvested as soon as the leaves lose their vitality. This usually happens late in autumn due to cold. The tuber looks like a Dahlia tuber, where the function of the stem part is essential. Many side tubers can be harvested; a few side tubers with the stem part can be overwintered in sand or potted in a frost-free place. During growth in the summer, cuttings can be taken, so that young plants can also overwinter, which greatly speeds up propagation.
IN APRIL, OUR MOTHER TUBERS ARE POTTED, SO FIRST WE SELL THE TUBERS, THEN THE PLANTS. DO NOT ORDER THEM SIMULTANEOUSLY!

From late April onwards, plant the stem tubers (with eyes) 50cm apart, possibly in raised beds with or without black cover. Growth is fantastic even in "bad" summers. The plant tolerates some shade well. Harvesting can be done from September for very tender "half-grown" tubers or in October-November for very full, mature tubers. The leaves can be harvested during growth and processed into medicine; young leaves are also edible as spinach. The plant is perennial but not frost-hardy.
