Ton Vreeken ❞For this letter, the subjects are already smiling at me from the paper; let's see how far I get. I always only start writing after my night team has gone home...

Beautiful collection of HelleboresOne of my top growers is ready to supply us with the most beautiful plants from his Hellebore collection. We offer this package once a year; actually, we're too busy this year, but I don't want to withhold it from you (and my grower!). You'll have a full week to sign up for this wonderful package, after which I'll take the offer down. Haven't you seen the package yet? I'd say: seize the opportunity, you'll enjoy these Hellebore plants for years, they bloom in winter and spring.
Take your time to read the composition; here you'll find all the information and, of course, the ordering option

(Heated) SowingThe avid sowers are already getting the itch, we notice it from the infectious impatience with which customers bombard us: "we have to start sowing!" of course, hundreds of packages are already leaving here weekly.
If you start very early, you primarily sow the slow growers, as they need more time. These varieties (such as eggplant, bell pepper, and chili pepper) do need warmth and fine sowing soil to germinate. I once started with a good guide for sowing, a sequel to that is still to come, but the overture is already worth reading, just take a look here.
You probably know that we have built up an enormous range of sowing aids. It's actually impossible to highlight anything, each one is handy, and we offer many products at a competitive price because we can buy directly from the factory. The entire chapter can be found here
Still, a tip: these heated propagators with a thermostat are highly valued, and customers come from afar to pick them up
Later in winter, when spring is already knocking at the door, you no longer have to pull out all the stops for good germination and growth results. You could then, for example, purchase a Jiffy Tray with a handy Water Collection Tray.
The pellets in the tray swell into pots with the most ideal sowing soil: it's child's play! You can buy the Jiffypots separately to refill the tray.

Early chores in a mini greenhouseThe BoGreen brand guarantees robust products. You'll find many of them in our store; not everything is on the website yet, as that also takes time (a scarce commodity...).
I will introduce new items to you from time to time. Take, for instance, the handy IGLOO mini-greenhouse: for overwintering plants, but also great for hardening off young plants or for standing tasks. Have a look
A nice, smart, and sturdy grow tunnel for winter and summer can be found here.
Highly recommended!

Jerusalem Artichokes and SunchokesLet's start with Jerusalem Artichokes and Sunchokes. The harvest was large in 2019, and because we were a bit short last winter, I stocked up on a huge amount of tubers. It's funny to notice that we can sell them all over Europe; currently, it seems that garden enthusiasts are whispering about them to each other. Scandinavia and the Baltic States are notable growth areas for us. You probably know the product by now, the easiest grower in the garden, winter hardy, so 100% Permaculture... We offer a growing number of top varieties, you can find them here

Wild garlicOne of our growers is potting up their wild garlic bulbs for us, and they've already started to grow! This perennial plant has a delicious garlic aroma and actually grows in the shade, where not much else edible can be cultivated. We're getting hundreds more, but don't forget to include this plant in your collection.
✽
RhubarbFrom the same grower, we receive rhubarb crowns in winter and potted plants in spring. The last crowns will be sold in the coming weeks, so you can plant them right in the middle of winter.
An extra affordable set can be found here; we will select beautiful varieties for you.

Yakon“I didn't expect that!” I often hear from customers who are enjoying the harvest of their cultivated Yacon tubers. I don't know of any tuber that is as fresh, juicy and sweet as this one. How tasty and healthy can go together you can read in the description.
Last year we enjoyed a huge harvest, so the price could be lowered a bit!
✽
Arrowroot, Indian potato and moreThere are many more tubers that come from the Andes region. We were initially afraid of scarcity because my main grower had a poor harvest. So I bought everything I came across. Fortunately, we now have more in stock than ever: discover, taste, and enjoy the healthy food of the Aymara, Quechua, and Uru people.

Seed potatoesMore than half of the seed potatoes have now arrived. Part of our team is peeling off the pallets to divide all those bags into kgs. A big and dusty job!
The varieties that we can ultimately offer can be found here.

Summer-flowering bulbsThis week we have (almost) completed the purchase of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers. Please note, they are not in stock yet, but most should be by mid-February. So you can order them now, we also have many new varieties!
Right... that last section was a huge enumeration. But I'm not stopping yet. It's not 3 AM, Classic FM is keeping me in the right mood, and a cup of coffee every hour keeps me awake and warm... It'll probably be finished around 5 AM... (yawn)
I also wanted to mention that the 2019 garlic harvest is remarkably good quality. Normally around this time, we have to sort through crates to remove bad bulbs, but now I mainly feel firm and hard bulbs, a pleasure. Did you know that garlic is actually just a perennial plant? Customers sometimes ask: when should I harvest them? I usually say: you don't have to, you can also leave the bulbs, they will just expand, a nice sight, such an enormous clump of cloves and bulbs! Of course, it's also useful to harvest them and replant cloves, but this knowledge helps you realize that there's no fixed planting time for garlic. You simply plant them as long as the cloves are good quality. So this month too, we've regularly been able to buy more, you can find them here.
Two other such problem-free perennial onion-like plants are the Gray Shallot and the Utrecht Miniature Onion. These last two need to be planted quickly now, because the plant material is less "hardy" than garlic. But the harvest time is very relative: they are winter-hardy, so you can leave them and harvest as needed. If Sister Bertken had known about this crop, she would not have gone in vain to her garden for garlic...

And Pascaline, she kept on drawing...You're probably already looking forward to Pascaline's next drawing! This time, very aptly, the narrative drawing is about the Jerusalem artichoke or (in French) Topinambour. Enlarge the photo (by clicking on it) and enjoy the educational and funny details!
Of course, I always include her website: www.soulfulash.com
This is the end, thanks for slogging through my Newsletter again, don't secretly scroll straight to this section!
There's a lot going on these weeks, 2 of our daughters (with their partners) are moving, the eldest son is renovating, and our youngest son is eagerly awaiting his new apartment. We help where we can, Marry (much) more than I do; the involvement is great and a joy.
This weekend, my wife Marry celebrates her 60th birthday (still a young blossom then) and we are very grateful that we have each other in good health. We see that this is not a given all around us...
Monday marked 24 years since my father (and colleague) passed away. Together with my mother, I was present during his last moments. A privilege as the youngest of 11 children. How he would have loved to see our company in its current development! He was a source of plant knowledge, which he fortunately shared with me on many occasions.
Finally, I look forward to a play tonight at Theater Rotterdam, “God is a Mother”, about the complex relationship between mothers, their children, and religion. I already know that there will be a lot of recognition, and hopefully a mirror for others. Too often, belief rules over love; I could write books about that....
I wish you all a good weekend, hold onto your hats because it's going to storm!
