No. 94: In the Spotlight.

❝

I realise that it can sometimes be difficult to see the wood for the trees with us, which is why our Newsletters provide an overview of the seasons, and today also include some (hopefully) interesting offers

Elephant Garlic and Wild Leek

This is the third season that, in addition to Perennial Leek, we are also selling well-growing Elephant Garlic. The downside of the past 2 years was that we could only deliver them from February onwards, so many of you have these as backorders. Last week we managed to purchase a large batch (15,000 bulbs) from a Dutch grower at a very competitive price! This is a ONE-TIME opportunity, so we will quickly fulfill your backorders at the new price: you will receive 4x as many bulbs for the same amount.

Elephant garlic

Elephant garlic looks like regular garlic but forms much larger bulbs (up to 500g) with 5-6 enormous cloves. It is a beautiful crop that, like Ail des ours, is actually closer to leeks than to garlic. The flavour is strong enough to be reminiscent of garlic, mild but with some garlic aromas. The plants can grow quite large, so give them a well-drained spot with plenty of humus, preferably in raised beds. Elephant garlic is hardy and usually only flowers in the 2nd year. After the purple-pink bloom (1-2 m high), the bulbs can be harvested. In China, this crop is harvested before flowering, which is why it often contains only 1 single bulb, but waiting an extra year gives more results. An ideal crop for permaculture! Next year they will cost €5.95 for 5 bulbs again. Now you can buy 100 bulbs for only €19.95, which is more than 80% cheaper! Check out this great offer, we have a large stock, but if you're interested, make sure to get them while supplies last, because when they're gone, they're gone.

Wild leek

Currently, we have prehistoric leeks grown by an enthusiastic Dutch grower; we used to buy them in France, but the quality from there was not always reliable. Part of the harvest is still available as bulbs, and we have had the rest potted, and they are already growing nicely! The bulbs look like garlic cloves, but the taste is softer and sweeter (towards leek). This variety is therefore called (probably rightly so) the ancestor of our leeks and, in addition to the refined leek flavour, also has beautiful white and pink blooms clustered in compact umbels on 1 m high stems. In summer, the bulbs are fully grown and can be harvested and eaten. Replant the smaller bulbs for harvest the following year! The leaves are, of course, edible like leeks. Prehistoric leeks are often compared and confused with Elephant Garlic. They are very closely related, but the latter forms thicker bulbs with a tougher skin.

Mini Kiwis... unknown and super delicious!

Thanks to our contact with a top Belgian grower, we can supply these lovingly and expertly grown kiwi berries in the best varieties. In the coming weeks, you can once again sign up for these 2 unique collections of Kiwi Berries. The varieties are extra fertile, extra tasty, and yield a large annual harvest relatively quickly. Kiwis can be pruned into many shapes, and the parasol shape is a unique model, after years of pruning, an independent tree emerges! We also offer these patiently pruned trees; our grower still has about 15, so be quick because he can (due to time constraints) never grow them again...

Did you know that pruning grapes and kiwis are hardly different? A great website with grape pruning shapes can be found here.

This Collection consists of a beautifully shaped parasol tree with a corresponding young male tree. I was truly impressed by these trees last year; they were already full of young fruits! As I already wrote: there are still 15 of these mature trees...

We call this set "The Parasol and the Male".

Rhubarb

Every year in autumn, we receive a large shipment of rhubarb plant rhizomes. Our grower selects the best varieties, tests them, tastes them, and is critical of their usability. Rhubarb is a perennial plant that you can harvest from for years. Provided it's eaten in moderation, it's a very healthy vegetable with many uses. Personally, I most enjoy a bowl of cooked rhubarb with a little sugar: delightfully tart and delightfully pure. You can choose from these reliable varieties.

For those who cannot or do not want to choose, we have a great offer.

Roses

This week our new shipment of roses arrived. We collected 6 varieties or species that are particularly suitable for salads (the petals), perfume (rose water), cakes, desserts, and jams (rose hips). These are old-fashioned roses that like to stand in the sun, want to be well-fertilized, and take up a lot of space (although annual pruning is beneficial).

Chayote at an autumn price

More and more people are familiar with Chayote by now. Perhaps you've even grown them yourself.... If not: our grower had record harvests again, and we have crates full of this unique fruit! You can, of course, eat them: delicious as a stir-fry vegetable, but you can also plant the fruit two-thirds deep in airy soil in a large pot, and behold: the fruit will sprout into a fast-growing climbing plant. During the winter, place it indoors in a sunny spot. Regularly prune the shoots and, from mid-May, place the plant in a warm spot in the garden where it can grow vigorously, along a fence or over a pergola. They are now (while supplies last from this grower) particularly inexpensive.

Peonies

Over the past week, there has been an almost unmanageable influx of newly grown products. One of the annual highlights is our collection of Peonies, which we purchase directly from a passionate grower. Beautiful, large rootstocks, big enough to bloom in 2021 at the latest. Peonies usually need a year to get used to their new location.

Of the 44 varieties, this year we can supply 33 in the most beautiful colours and with attractive characteristics.

Memo from our previous Newsflash

You responded enthusiastically to our last Newsletter's offers. In fact, we are still busy delivering the orders. But... I bought a large stock, so we can still make many customers happy with 2 out of the 3 offers.

Here they are again:

Giant Amaryllis bulbs

Our normal, annual assortment of Amaryllis bulbs (Hippeastrum) is in a good size of (mostly) 34/+, you say "34 up" and that is over 10 cm in diameter. Good for 2 flower stalks and thus guaranteed flowering. Here you will find these beautiful varieties.

This year, we have been able to purchase a beautiful collection of even larger bulbs, from which you can expect at least 3 flower stalks with 4 flowers (or more) from each bulb. You will be amazed by the floral splendor with which the bulbs will reward you!
The smallest size among these giants is 40/42, which is 13 cm in diameter, and the very largest are almost 15 cm (44/46), incredibly large, any larger and they would burst.

Will you also benefit from this unique series?

We are happy to offer these with some discount, it comes down to (approximately) buying 5 bulbs and paying for 4.

Plant Pampering Package

While browsing through my growers' lists, I came up with the idea of putting together a special plant package. I came across species that I rarely can buy in larger quantities. I am sure that I will please many customers with this package; I will also buy plants from it for my own rooftop terrace... We can make about 250 packages, which should be sufficient for the first order days.

For this Pamper Package, we will select 5 different plants (our choice) from these 6 species:

  1. Rice Paper Plant (Tetrapanax papyrifer) A rare, exotic foliage plant for the garden or a large pot, with leaves up to 1 meter in diameter!
  2. Common Myrtle (Myrtus communis) The well-known, wonderfully fragrant cosmetic plant, which has both aromatic leaves and sweetly scented flowers. Popular as a medicinal tea, indispensable in the Jewish Sukkot, and famous in a Sardinian liqueur.
  3. Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum) Still relatively unknown, but a nice addition to the berry spectrum. Extremely robust and tasty.
  4. Bee-Bee Tree (Tetradium danielii) This plant is almost impossible to keep in stock; we scour all of the Netherlands and buy almost everything. In this package, we offer a beautiful young plant of this indispensable bee-friendly species.
  5. Japanese Walnut Tree (Ginkgo biloba) Fantastic tree that also does very well in a pot. You can make a very beneficial tea from its distinctive leaves!
  6. Chinese Jasmine Tea (Jasminum stephanense) The striking yet soft pink color of this jasmine combines with a wonderful scent. Delicious in tea and a heavenly fragrant curtain in your garden!

The value of this package is € 35.00, and we can offer it for € 25.00

The Afterword

I am following the farmers' protest and the related problems, which threaten to arise in the "wild" nature of the Netherlands due to overly fertile soil, with great interest. Much wisdom and mutual respect are needed to give a new future to the upscaling in livestock farming that has been encouraged for years. I am curious how this will develop further; our country is inventive enough to tackle difficult problems, but in my opinion, the timeline for solutions should not be too short.

This weekend is a bit quieter for us; a nice intermezzo is the birthday of the youngest of our two granddaughters: Fiep. For the rest, I hope to find some peace and quiet with a newspaper or a good book, and perhaps a visit to the cinema. In Dordrecht, there is a very nice and cozy arthouse cinema called "De Movies." No crunching of popcorn, but you can go in with your cup of coffee or glass of wine, and after the film, everyone dutifully takes their "waste" out of the hall. The beautiful film 'Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu' could be an option...

For the rest of the time, I will gather the courage to do some chores around the house. We have had some demolition work because a sewer pipe had to be replaced. In an old house, you're never done!
