Light is needed for growing indoors, I've talked about that before. In winter, the days are short and behind the window you already miss 50% of the light on the other side of that window. Light ensures that your plants (for example, your freshly germinated seeds) become compact and sturdy. That's why your plants become long and thin due to insufficient light.
